The attack on Vimy was part of a larger British attack in the Arras region in France. The plan was to have a massive movement across no-man's land by British forces on either side of the ridge while the pressure of capturing the ridge fell to the Canadians. If the ground stay in enemy hands, it would mean failure on the battle front generally and cost countless lives in another failed push to break the German line.
